Oral and Dental Health of Old People

In the near future, 20% of the world's population is thought to be over 65 years old. With the increase of old age population; teeth can stay in the mouth for longer, thanks to better education and nutrition. Disruption of oral health occurs due to inadequate dental care services, systemic diseases, drug use, improper and inadequate nutrition, and inappropriate oral care. In general, intraoral changes thought to be related to aging; are tooth loss, darkening in teeth color, recession in gingival, decrease in the amount of saliva, weakness in the mouth tissue and muscles and decrease in taste. Parallel to the aging, formal changes are seen as a result of corrosion of enamel. This can progress from simple surface corrosions to significant material loss.

A significant proportion of the old population use removable dentures. These dentures can lead to changes that affect both appearance and integrity of intraoral tissues. This situation leads to differentiation in the function of chewing and eating habits. Along with aging, bone loss occurs in all bones (osteoporosis), often in women. In elderly patients who do not use dentures, this condition causes collapse in mouth and face, shrink in the mouth and wrinkles that start on the corners of lips. When the bone breakdown of lower jawbone reaches the advanced dimensions, the jawbones becomes thin and sharp like a knife, and it makes usage of denture difficult.  In order to preserve the natural structure of the jaw bones, it is necessary to keep the teeth or the tooth roots functioning in the mouth.

  • The fluidity of saliva decreases as age-related. Depending on this situation, bacterial plaque accumulation and thereby the risk of decay and gum diseases increases,
  • Since xerostomia reduces the resistance of intraoral tissues towards strikes, wounds in the mouth are seen frequently,
  • Xerostomia causes the accumulation a layer emerging from the waste of food and this causes decrease of taste. There are burning, itching and pain on tongue,
  • As the effect of mechanical cleansing and moisturizing of the saliva decreases, fungal infections can be seen especially in the mouth and on the lip corners,
